There are no shop or field driven rivets on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, but walking across the wide two-way pedestrian and cyclist path one can feel the presence of those craftsmen and women who fabricated and erected this twenty first century bridge. Towering concrete A-frames, so massive they seem to challenge the space they occupy. Vehicles of every size have no adverse effect on the fabricated steel members of the roadway as they travel across the six-lane main span of this cable-stayed bridge.
We began our bridge walk at Windsor, Ontario, at the end of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The most memorable experiences were interactions with the friendly pedestrians and cyclists we encountered on the bridge.
For pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Gordie Howe International Bridge, travel identification for yourself and any children or minors is the only requirement. Passport or enhanced driver’s license. No toll. Open every day 8am to 8pm.
