Historic Dresden Suspension Bridge

There is nothing more exciting for a craftsman than to encounter an exceptional structure and from its many structural members visualize the tools and machinery used to fabricate it. Nan’s two-day bridge tour was capped with a visit to the historic Dresden Suspension Bridge over the Muskingum River in Dresden, Ohio, and meeting up with Ohio historian David Simmons and his wife Melinda and their dog Ruby. David’s request for photographs of pin-connected eyebars from high above the bridge towers tested my skills as a drone operator and the Mavic Air 2’s performance, which resulted in some impressive photographs that provided insight into to the design and fabrication of the connection. There is an interest group developing to save this bridge and will be the subject of the next Iron & Steel Preservation Newsletter. Vern Mesler 2022
