During our extended stay here in the San Francisco Bay Area we will walk along many of the shop-riveted bridges and buildings in the San Francisco area. Alameda Island’s Park Street bridge, a 1935 pin-connected Thacher shop-riveted through truss, is one of our favorite historic bridges on the West Coast. We will step under the wall of shop-driven rivets in the Golden Gate Bridge tower and photograph the rows of precisely driven shop rivets and work to correct the historic record on the difference between a shop-driven rivet and a field-driven rivet.
